March 28, 2022
Box of herbs and jars on table of the Elizabethan Pharmacy at Roanoke Island Festival Park

Roanoke Island Festival Park is excited to share its latest educational program with guests this spring. During your next visit make plans to visit the Elizabethan Pharmacy in the Settlement Site.

Three men in 16th century period costume standing around the Elizabethan pharmacy table in the Settlement Site at Roanoke Island Festival Park.

Stop by the apothecary station in the Settlement Site and discover which cure can help you with your ailment. The apothecary station features several examples of herbs and medicine used to treat ailments and illnesses during the Elizabethan era. Discover unusual remedies from the past such as swallowing young frogs or live spiders to alleviate asthma symptoms.

The pharmacy's guide book features herbal treatment options for common ailments the first English settlers would have likely encountered during their expeditions to Roanoke Island. Find the 16th century cure for smallpox, various wounds, and more during your visit.
